Clone formats: proven short-video structures, broken down

Ten formats that already hold attention, each with its beat timing, a script skeleton and the command that clones it with your own subject.

The formats

  • Tier list / ranking video

Ranking formats hold attention because the viewer wants to see where their favourite lands. The list is a promise: every row is a payoff, and the last…

  • Street interview / vox pop

Man-on-the-street formats work because the viewer is waiting for the awkward answer. Curiosity about other people does the retention work for you.…

  • Three rules / advice format

Numbered advice promises a finite list, so viewers stay until the count finishes. It is the cheapest structure to write and the easiest to re-run week…

  • Podcast clip

The podcast clip format borrows trust: an existing conversation already sounds credible, and a tight cut of it works as a standalone video.…

  • Product demo / UGC testimonial

A demo works when the viewer sees the outcome before the feature list. Show the result, then explain how it happened.…

  • Myth vs fact

Contradiction is a retention engine: viewers stay to see whether the myth is confirmed or destroyed, and the verdict gives the clip a natural end.…

  • Before / after

Transformation is the most legible story in short video: two states, one gap, and the viewer wants to know how the gap closed.…

  • Day in the life

A timeline format lowers the barrier to entry: the viewer already knows the structure, so they stay for the specifics of your day or process.…

  • Reaction / commentary

Reaction formats piggyback on an existing audience: someone else's clip brings the context, and your commentary is the new value.…

  • Top-N listicle

A counted list sets an explicit endpoint. Viewers stay because they can see how much is left, and the ranking order rewards watching to the end.…

  • Two-person dialogue / skit

Dialogue formats hold attention because the viewer follows a relationship, not a claim. Two voices disagreeing is the cheapest way to create tension w…

  • Video call / screen-share format

A call layout lets you show software honestly: the interface is the evidence, and a second face makes it feel observed rather than advertised.…

  • Product story / origin format

Origin stories work because they delay the pitch: the viewer stays for the narrative and arrives at the product already invested.…

  • Unboxing / first-impression

Unboxing works on anticipation: the viewer knows something is inside, and the format's job is to delay showing it with purpose.…

  • Side-by-side comparison

Comparison formats hold attention on a single question — which of these two is better — and the split screen makes the answer feel checkable instead o…

  • Green-screen comment reply

Answering a comment inverts the audience relationship: the prompt comes from them, so the video starts with built-in relevance and a reason to watch t…

  • Text-message / chat story

Chat overlap formats are read, not watched: the viewer scans the messages, which makes them unusually cheap to produce and easy to follow on mute.…

  • Explainer with voice-over

Voice-over explainers carry more information per second than any talking-head format, which makes them the right choice when the topic itself is the h…

Why clone a format instead of prompting for footage

A format is the part of a video that transfers: hook length, beat order, shot types, caption rhythm. It is why the same structure works for a completely different product. Prompting invents a structure every time; cloning reuses one that is already proven.

How to use these pages

Each page gives you the beat breakdown, a script skeleton with segments and selection anchors, the素材 you need and the exact run command. Pick the format closest to your reference video, then replace the script with your own claims.

FAQ

Do I have to use the exact structure shown?

Treat the beats as the default. Keep the rhythm and swap the content; if you change the order, you are designing a new format and should test it separately.

Can one format cover several platforms?

Yes. Aspect ratio and layout live in the stylesheet, so the same composition renders vertical, square or wide.

How many formats should I clone?

Two or three per channel is usually enough to start: one for acquisition, one for proof, one for retargeting.
